Ollscoil Éireannach is ea An Coláiste Ollscoile, Baile Átha Cliath, (nó Coláiste na hOllscoile, Baile Átha Cliath mar a
ghlaoitear uirthi go minic), atá suite i mBelfield i ndeisceart na príomhchathrach, Baile Átha Cliath. Is an ollscoil is
mó in Éirinn í le breis agus 20,000 mac léinn cláraithe inti. Is comhcholáiste de chuid Ollscoil na hÉireann í. B'í an
chéad ollscoil Chaitliceach in Éirinn.
The years after Catholic Emancipation in Ireland (1829) were pocked with intermittent political upheaval, devastating
famine and emigration, but eventually saw the majority population gradually gain a foothold on the rungs of education
and influence. In 1854, a movement spearheaded by Cardinal John Cullen and led by John Henry (later Cardinal) Newman,
succeeded in opening the doors of a new university, which would make higher level education accessible to a broad
sweep of Irish people. The Catholic University of Ireland opened its doors on the feast of St Maol-Maedoc, 3 November 1854.
On that day the names of seventeen students were entered on the register of what would grow to be the largest
university on the island. Originally centrally located, most of the university's faculties have moved over the years
since the early 1960s to a 1.4 square kilometres (148 hectares) park campus at Belfield, four kilometres south of
the city centre.
Newman, the first rector, wrote in 1852 that the study of history serves to "enlarge and enlighten the mind", and
history has been at the very heart of UCD's intellectual life since its foundation. Today the School of History & Archives
is home to a dynamic international community of scholars and students and to one of the most important public
archives in Ireland.
