2010-2011 saw the QUB History Society go from strength to strength with the society establishing itself as an extremely social society. This, aided by the weekly meetings helped people (in particular Freshers) make friends which made the social events even more successful. This year the executive have decided to utilise the success of these social events to raise money for Project Rwanda. This is a charity which the School of History supports with the aim of one day taking a group of students out to Rwanda. The overall mission of History Society is to provide a base for students who wish to extend their interest outside the lecture theatre and make new friends along the way. The society also aims to increase awareness of the Rwandan genocide and raise funds to aid the recovery through its support of the charity Project Rwanda. This year, as well as continuing and improving on these established social events, we hope to raise the number of academic events and debates.
Founded by Queen Victoria, the Queen's University in Ireland, was designed to be a non-denominational alternative to
Trinity College Dublin which was controlled by the Anglican Church. The University was made up of three Queen's
Colleges - in Cork, Galway and Belfast. Founded in 1845, Queen's opened in 1849 when the first students entered the
magnificent new college building designed and built by Charles Lanyon. Since then, the University estate has grown to
more than 300 buildings - many of them listed for their architectural importance. The first batch of students numbered
90; today there are around 24,000 students of all types. Atheagraíodh na hollscoileanna in Éirinn le acht na bliana 1908.
Cuireadh na coláistí ríoga i gCorcaigh agus i nGaillimh agus Coláiste na hOllscoile, Baile Átha Cliath in Ollscoil na hÉireann,
agus fágadh an coláiste a bhí i mBéal Feirste leis féin mar Ollscoil na Banríona. Aithníodh institiúidí eile mar choláistí
aitheanta de chuid Ollscoile na hÉireann de réir a chéile, an ollscoil phápúil i Má Nuad agus na coláistí oiliúna do mhúinteoirí
go háirithe.
History at Queen's includes around thirty teaching staff, over seventy postgraduates and around 400 undergraduates.
