The Cumann Staire is one of the oldest and most prestigious student associations of Ollscoil na hÉireann Gaillimh, with
a reputation for drive and organising abilities over the last number of years in particular. Its membership includes
undergrad and postgrad students, local and visiting students and some staff members as well. The organising
Coiste of the CS is representative of this
mix and is based on experience, guide books written by previous Coiste members and an expansive constitution,
the CS Bunreacht.
While the primary focus of the CS is to bring top quality speakers to the university to present papers on an eclectic
mix of historic topics this is just part of the year's work. The university's largest formal dress balls is the annual
Arts Bál and with 1600 in attendence the CS can rightly claim to run one of the largest such events in the
country. The CS maintains contacts with similar clubs around Europe through its own initiatives and through its active
membership of ISHA; as the first Irish member of the International Students of History Association it has encouraged
others to join up. Annual trips abroad always feature an academic aspect through meeting local history students and
their staff. Other events organised include table quizzes, local trips, parties, participation in inter-society events and the
annual attendance at the CCS-IHSA conference in support of those speakers funded by the CS academic support fund.
This year (2011-12) the CS faithful won't have far to travel as they are hosting the Annual Conference in their riverside
campus and promise to outdo all previous years!
Bunaíodh Queen’s College Galway i 1845, agus tá OÉ Gaillimh mar a thugtar uirthi inniu, ar cheann de na hionaid
is fearr in Éirinn d’fheabhas acadúil. Tá os cionn 15,000 mac léinn inti agus cáil uirthi le fada mar gheall ar a feabhas
teagaisc agus taighde i seacht ndámh – Dámh na nDán, na hEolaíochta, na Tráchtála, na hInnealtóireachta, an Léinn
Cheiltigh, an Leighis 7 na nEolaíochtaí Sláinte agus an Dlí.
The distinctive feature of History at NUI Galway is the bilingual, multi-cultural atmosphere which the Department promotes.
Alongside a traditional English-language programme, as offered by other Irish universities, the Department offers a
full programme in the Irish language. The Department's staff has wide experience of university teaching in other
countries, and each year the Department attracts large numbers of visiting students from both North America and
continental Europe who choose Galway as their place of study for one or two semesters in Ireland's 'cultural capital'.
Tá tradisiún láidir ag Ollscoil na hÉireann, Gaillimh, i bhforbairt na Gaeilge mar le cúrsaí ollscoile a chur ar fáil sa teanga
san. Tá Roinn na Staire, ach go háirithe, luaite le Gaeilge le beagnach ceithre scór bliain, agus réimse breá leathan de
chúrsaí ar fáil do mhic léinn gur mian leo a gcuid ollscolaíochta a fháil tré Ghaeilge. Ar an bhfoireannn buan sa Roinn
tá naonar fé láthair a mhúineann cúrsaí tré Bhéarla agus tré Ghaeilge. Má cuirtear leis sin léachtóirí eile a bhíonn ag
teagasc sa Roinn (leachtóirí ar chuairt agus ar chonradh san áireamh) is fairsinge airís an soláthar so tré Ghaeilge.
Fágann so gurb í Roinn na Staire in Ollscoil na hÉireann, Gaillimh, an t-aon roinn staire amháin in Éirinn ina mbíonn
cúrsaí tré Ghaeilge ar fáil do mhic léinn ag gach staid dá gcúrsa céime, agus go deimhin ag an leibhéal iarchéime
chomh maith.
