The History Society of UL (OL) is an active student society, officially founded in 1997, on the university's riverside campus near the City of Limerick. The society organises lectures and discussions by members of the UL faculty and guest speakers on all aspects of Histiography, be it 1000 years of Polish History or Discussing the Battle of the Boyne. Some of the achievements to date of the society are the re-enactment of the Danes arriving in Limerick, the building of a reed raft using ancient technology, hosting the CCS - IHSA Annual Conference, and the publication of History Studies. The academic year 2009/10 will see a special tenth anniversary edition of this journal published; Freyne Corbett is the current editor and publication is due in March 2010. A Call For Papers has already been anounced for Volume XI of the journal and the notice (PDF) may be downloaded here for futher details and in order to post it on relevant college noticeboards.

History has been part of undergraduate courses in UL since 1972, part of taught postgraduate courses since 1987 and a focus
of postgraduate research since 1994. History was part of the Department of European Integration and Administration and then
the Department of Government and Society. In May 2002, the Department of History was established. In the academic year
1975/6, as the first cohort of students proceeded to their degree, a total of 120 individual students took at least one module in
history. In the academic year 2003/4, a total of 1,517 students took at least one history module at undergraduate level while
167 took modules at postgraduate level.
